I grew lemon basil the past 2 years...it has a great lemony aroma, and I like using it to flavor water. Shove a clean sprig of lemon basil in a bottle of water, let it sit overnight, and you've got a tasty beverage. I was reading a great article about infusing flavors into liquor, and it hit me - I need to marry lemon basil to gin.
My cocktail of choice is a classic gin and tonic...ice, gin, tonic, and a twist of lime. If I'm
having a mixed drink, it generally will be that. The idea of my favorite cocktail infused with a zippy herb from my garden was irresistible.
So, it was ridiculously simple...
1. Pick the lemon basil
2. Wash the lemon basil
3. Shove the lemon basil in a clean mason jar.
4. Fill jar with gin and put on a lid.
5. Leave it on the table and shake it every time you walk by.
6. Let it steep 4 days, then strain the gin. Disard the lemon basil.
Labeling is important, or unfortunate disposal of your tasty gin by other family members could happen. Leaves in a mason jar are not normal.
The gin retains a yellow-greenish tint from the leaves. Yes, it looks like a jar of pee. You're very mature.
Diluted with ice and tonic water, the mixed drink on the right doesn't have much of the yellowish color left, but it has a ton of delicious lemon basil flavor. It did not need any lime. My wife does not like gin and tonic, but she took a sip of this and wanted more.
Any suggestions for other herb/liquor combinations?
Sweet. A combination of two great pastimes. As long as one doesn't carry too far over into the other and you forget what your name is...
ReplyDeleteWould love to have a cup of that delicious-ness...
ReplyDeleteTina, I still have a full handle of lemon basil gin in my cupboard. Hopefully next Friday will work out for some Risk.
